Whale Watching in Monterey Bay
A family of seals plays happily in the harbor as our whale watching tour ship pulls away, the vibration of the motor numbing my core and deafening my ears. One brave pinniped twirls out of the water beside us as if to catch a better look before splashing back into the boat’s wake. I nuzzle into my husband and hold tight to my toddler, bundled in his life jacket, as three loud horns indicate the start of our journey into the Pacific Ocean.

Hints of Heaven in Sleepytown California
Despite the tourists, it’s a quiet life in this sleepy town of Monterey, California; where nothing opens until just shy of noon, and the average resident has long since retired. Peace abounds in this little villa that my hostess calls home, inspired by the Belgian roots of its late owner. I sit upon a patio that connects its five tenants in an opportunity for friendship. Church bells and chattering birds sing of an older time—a simpler time.

The clutter of manmade tinkerings fades from my ears as I step out of the cypress shade into a clearing of windswept sand. I catch a whiff of kelp and taste the sunburnt earth. Waves unfurl their turquoise wings like Venus fly traps before the bite, their violent crash a deceitful lullaby, a lion’s purr.
